It’s the first time that the famed Tierkreis by Karlheinz Stockhausen is reproposed in a rock version. The challenge taken up by Aidoru is not the simple reinterpretation of the work, but has added value primarily as an effort of constructive dialogue between the world of “well-cultured” and “popular” music.
Tierkreis (german translation of Zodiac), is composed of 12 melodies, one for every single zodiac sign and it’s probably the Stockhausen’s most famous composition. Originally it was written for music box as part of a children’s theatrical opera (Musik im Bauch), however the Tierkreis’s melodies are independent and can be performed by any kind of instruments.
Since they were composed (1974/75), a lot of ensembles, musicians and orchestras gave their own versions of Tierkreis, but till today nobody gave a rock version like the Aidoru’s one.
Electric Zodiac borned with the goodwill of link together Aidoru’s personnel, composed by rock instruments, with a “wellcultured” repertory, with the hope of create a bridge between the two worlds.
You can find some theoretical and analytic works in the attached book, each written by musicologists, music specialists and journalists, that take the Aidoru’s performance as a chance to deal with some topics about state of music’s research today.
Does it still make sense to talk about music genres? Which is the level of contamination between “well-cultured” and other kinds of music genres?
Works by: Paolo Bellipanni (chief editor Rockline), Luigi Ceccarelli (composer), Giacomo d’Alelio (journalist Liberazione), Roberto Fabbi (art director APERTO festival, I Teatri/Reggio Emilia Foundation), Claudia Galal (music journalist), Dario Giovannini (Aidoru), Stefano Lombardi Vallauri (musicologist and teacher IULM, Milano), Fabio Strada (editor Allaboutjazz).
We decided to work on the melodies of Tierkreis because they have a celestial and suspended flavour, they are free and transporting, and because the work allows for great freedom in interpretation.
Tierkreis is made up of 12 chants, mystically and esoterically connected with the 12 signs of the Zodiac. Those who interpret the composition are entrusted the task of finding the emotional location where the work should be taken.
We therefore took the scores and re-elaborated them following our style, without worrying about violating something “sacred”, but, rather, humbly supposing that maybe Karlheinz Stockhausen might have enjoyed this little contamination experiment.
We are on the stage as a real acoustic quartet, a string quartet, although we hold electric instruments, and our sound come out from amplifiers.
However, there is no general amplification, as there usually is in normal rock concerts, so we can thus explore the acoustic levels of this anomalous quartet, whose musicians are connected each other only through their direct source of sound and their “musical gestures”.
Finally, by working on this music, we want to build a bridge between two separate worlds: the world of contemporary classical music and that of rock, that too often are forcefully kept far from each other.
